Easton,
My sweet boy, you are 10 months old already. Sometimes I look at you and I am surprised at how big you are and how fast you are growing up. Yesterday, you decided to celebrate your 10-month birthday by standing up all by yourself. You were sitting in the floor playing and decided you'd much rather stand. You grabbed two handfuls of the couch and hauled yourself right on up and stood there grinning at me. It was so cute to watch you do that by yourself for the first time. You love to have mama or daddy help you walk through the house.

You’ve also decided that crawling is not so bad either. You used to not be that interested in crawling. You much preferred rolling where you needed to go. Now you seem to think that the crawling is OK too. On Tuesday (Papa Easton's birthday), you crawled across the living room floor just like you'd been doing it for months. Maybe you were just waiting for there to be a good enough reason for you to do it. Your ball rolled across the floor and you crawled to get it. You love playing ball. We found a small Elmo/Cookie Monster ball at Food Lion one day while grocery shopping and I bought it for you. You seem to like that ball the best out of all the balls you have to play with. I think it's because it's just the perfect size for your little hands.

You feed yourself most of the time. Sometimes when I give you something to eat in a bowl in the high chair, you lean forward and peer over the edge of the bowl. Once you've checked everything out, you dive into it, grabbing a handful and cramming as much as you can into your hungry little mouth. You love watching me cut a banana into pieces and let the pieces fall onto the tray of your high chair. You seem to think mama's quite the magician and I'm quite content to go on letting you think that.

Daddy has been giving you a bath in the evenings. We've discovered that you love to have us pour water from a cup into your bath. You reach your chubby little hand (or sometimes just one little finger) out to touch the stream of water and just stare at it in fascination. I love to watch you try to figure things out.

We took you to the Shenandoah County Fair this week. We went with Ms. Katy and you had a good time. Your favorite part was the balloon you got from the 4-H kids. You were thrilled with that balloon and of course, mama had to take a picture of you with your first balloon. (On an old, one-time use camera that hasn’t been developed yet. Picture later.) I thought you’d really enjoy seeing the animals in the livestock exhibit but it was way past your bedtime so you weren’t really that into it. The goats and sheep were really checking you out though, sticking their heads through the fence to get a whiff of you. You just let them sniff you and weren’t even scared. You’re a brave boy!

We also spent some time at the daycare where mama used to work. We visited the infant room and made friends with 7 other babies. You met Mrs. Sharon and Mrs. Esther, the ladies mama used to work with. Everybody loved you and you loved everybody right back. One little boy reached over and was patting your face and you just crinkled up your nose, smiled and blinked your eyes a bit…almost like you were saying “Hey, what'cha doin’, silly boy?” It was so cute! I wasn’t sure how you’d react to that many new faces at once and all that noise but you were your usual easy-going self and seemed to enjoy checking everything out. I shouldn’t have worried about it. You are probably the most laid-back baby I’ve ever known.

You do let your wishes be known though. And loudly. When we feed you, you insist on having your own spoon. You don’t actually USE the spoon much yet, but by golly, you’ve got one to hold in case you decide you DO want to use it.

Mama’s awful singing still soothes you, which is great because you’ve decided that the only place you can sleep is your crib. You used to take a nap in the car but now you stay awake as long as humanly possible, even if it means a whole day without naps. We are almost always at home during nap time, so it’s usually not an issue. But sometimes I do have to resort to singing to you when you have fought off taking a nap all day and are cranky. Your favorite song is “All the Pretty Horses”. You like “Twinkle, Twinkle” and “You Are My Sunshine” too but the horse song is your favorite.

I love you, my little sweetie boy. Thanks for being your sunny, funny, sweet little self. I can’t remember what my life was like without you.
Love,
Mama.

My links (to the right) are working again...I think. I'm sure you've noticed by now that I also have a new look. It's a cute one I found at www.thecutestblogontheblock.com and it will work out nicely until I can get everything the way I want. Boy, I'm picky!

I've not been doing much blogging lately because looking at my messed up blog template makes me very cranky. I tried (again) unsuccessfully to change my template and lost a lot of features of my blog. You'd think I would have learned my lesson the last time. I hate computers.

Also, today I defrosted a whole chicken to make beer-butt chicken. (Gross sounding name but it's delicious!) When I unwrapped it and took the disgusting gizzards out, I found what looks like a huge WORM inside! I am too grossed out for words. It could be part of the innards of the chicken but it looks like a huge earthworm. Gag!

Should I scrap the whole thing? I don't feel much "like chicken tonight" after this gross discovery. I was tempted to take a picture and add it to this post but even thinking about it makes me almost gag. I didn't think you wanted me to share that with you.

Now what am I going to have for dinner? I think maybe a bowl of cereal sounds good. No bugs or worms, I hope! GROSS!!!

Update: Jason came home and looked at the disgusting thing in my kitchen sink and said "Eww gross. Yep. That looks like a worm." NASTY!! We threw it out and had soup. I don't think I can ever EVER buy another whole chicken ever again. They grossed me out before this but now? BLEH!!!

I just finished reading this amazing book. You've got to read it!

http://www.amazon.com/Mistaken-Identity-Families-Survivor-Unwavering/dp/1416567356/ref=pd_bbs_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1219851290&sr=8-2

From Amazon.com:

Meet Laura Van Ryn and Whitney Cerak: one buried under the wrong name, one in a coma and being cared for by the wrong family. This shocking case of mistaken identity stunned the country and made national news. Would it destroy a family? Shatter their faith? Push two families into bitterness, resentment, and guilt?
Read this unprecedented story of two traumatized families who describe their ordeal and explore the bond sustaining and uniting them as they deal with their bizarre reversal of life lost and life found. And join Whitney Cerak, the sole surviving
student, as she comes to terms with her new identity, forever altered, yet
on the brink of new beginnings. Mistaken Identity weaves a complex tale
of honesty, vulnerability, loss, hope, faith, and love in the face of one of
the strangest twists of circumstances imaginable.

Lunch with my friend and her sweetie pie daughter: $7
Birthday boy shirt for Easton's upcoming 1st birthday: $6.50
Having someone fun to shop with and finding good sales: PRICELESS!

Boy, I needed a day like today! I am on a bargain-shopping high right now. I just bought E $215.00 worth of clothes at Gymboree and only paid $46.95. Woohoo! Now that's my kind of shopping! I love the clothes at Gymboree but usually can't afford to shop there but not today! Everything is 30% off until Sunday...even clearance items! If you have kids or know someone who does...tell 'em to get over to Gymboree and check out their sale! Hmmm...wish they were paying me to say this here but unfortunately they're not. :) Happy shopping!

STILL working on my blog layout. I am determined to figure out how to create tabs for different subjects at the top. That way you don't have to see my menu plans or my recipes or whatever unless you want to. I'm determined to figure out how to do this myself because I can't afford to pay someone else to do it for me. I'd love to be able to turn my blog over to a web designer who actually knows what they're doing instead of slogging through endless tutorials on the web and spending hours in front of this computer! But since we're on a majorly tight budget, looks like I'll be doing the designing myself. Bear with me...if things look wonky here once in a while, you can bet I've been messing around with my template again. Hopefully I don't get myself in over my head and lose anything! Wish me luck! Any hints or free advice about this would be GREATLY appreciated!

Let's see if this works...
I've never tried to upload a document to blogger before but I wanted to share this with anybody that might need it.

This is what I use to make my life run more smoothly. It's a weekly schedule and meal planner. For breakfasts, J and I do our own thing so no need to plan that. Lunches are usually leftovers from the previous nights dinner or a sandwich. I usually only have to plan one meal a day, so I edited a meal planner I found online to suit my needs. I have a place to put any errands I need to run, to-do list items, and a place to plan what's for dinner.
Anyway, just thought I'd post this in case anyone might benefit from it.

Now if I could just get in the habit of doing this EVERY week. Sometimes I get lazy and don't fill this out but those weeks also seem to be the weeks I don't get anything done. It really works IF I actually do it! :)

Please let me know if this link doesn't work. I'm new to Google Docs and not quite sure if I uploaded it right. Thanks!

Menu Plan Monday

Well, OK I know it's Tuesday but I was busy all day yesterday. Here's what we're having this week:

Monday: Lasagna and garlic bread
Tuesday: Rosemary Lemon Chicken
Wednesday: Beefy Macaroni Bake
Thursday: Dinner w/friends at Brewbaker's (YAY! No cooking!)
Friday: Artichoke chicken
Saturday: Black bean and corn tostadas
Sunday: Leftovers or cook dinner on the grill

I've found that meal planning really helps me cut down on the grocery budget big time! We save money because we build around things we already have on hand, we shop around and buy what's on sale each week at the local stores, and I make use of coupons I get online, in the newspaper and by mail. Yesterday I got $13.60 worth of coupons by mail from signing up online and by writing letters to companies about their products. I got 2 $3 off coupons from Playtex because I wrote a letter telling them how much I love their products, $5. 10 worth of coupons from Earth's Best for signing up online at their website, and $2.50 from Dove from signing up for a free sample through Walmart's website.
Check out the "Frugal Mama's Favorites" links over on the right side of my page for some of my favorite money-saving websites.

I'm related to a queen. A Rodeo Queen that is! This past weekend, my cousin Nicole won the title of 2008 Lawton Rangers Rodeo Queen! YAY Nicole! I knew you could do it!

(Still waiting on that email, girl! And I'd love to see a picture when you get a chance! Love ya!)

I've been trying hard lately to slash our monthly grocery budget. Inspired by The Grocery Cart Challenge http://grocerycartchallenge.blogspot.com/, I thought I'd start out with $200/month. That sounds like a reasonable place to start considering we were spending WAY more than that on groceries...even when it was just the two of us! So far, I'm doing well. Through use of LOTS of coupons, shopping sales and making a meal plan, I'm doing OK. I went a bit over already because our fridge/freezer went out and I had to replace some staples like mayo and cheese and other misc stuff that we will usually keep on hand.
So far, we've spent $135.29 on groceries/household stuff this month. Not wonderful but not too awful compared to what we were previously spending. We have 15 days until J's next payday so considering the fridge/freezer disaster, we're not doing too bad. I am really kind of enjoying seeing how much stuff I can get for free or very cheap. Last week at Food Lion, I got 20 pkg of Gerber baby food for FREE using coupons! That's 40 servings for baby food for nothing!
We're doing ok financially, but without my paycheck, things can get awfully tight around here. Plus, the more money I save, it's almost like that's my paycheck. And trust me, saving this much money per month takes some real WORK sometimes! Going to more than one store to shop the best deals is time-consuming and exhausting but worth it.
Check back around the 25th for an updated total for the month. I expect next month to be right around $200 for the month if all goes well. Keep your fingers crossed for me!

Easton,
You are 9 months old and I think I probably say this every month but you are SO FUN! Right now you are in your highchair eating a cheese quesadilla. You have no teeth yet, but love to gum almost anything you can get your hands on. Pizza crust, toast, crackers, quesadilla...you love them all! You can crawl now but would much prefer to scoot on your back all over the house. You love to roll around in the living room floor and can sit up now with no problem.

You weigh 22lbs now and are 28 1/2 inches long. Everyone that meets you says you are such a big boy for 9 months old! Dr. Bott says you are healthy and tall for your age and for us to keep doing what we're doing.

A few weeks ago, we went to Oklahoma to see Pawpaw Ed in the hospital and I am so glad we got to visit him and tell him how much we love him. I took you into the room for one minute to see him and he opened his eyes and tried to wave at you. I know he was so happy to see you. Pawpaw Ed passed away a few days later and we will miss him very much. He loved you so much and talked all the time about what a good baby you are. I am so glad he got to meet you!

Great (your great grandma) loves you and says you are a "real Jim Dandy". She says she's never seen such a good baby and she's seen a lot of babies! I loved seeing her rock you, sing to you and play with you. I'm glad we got to spend some time with her for a while before we had to come back to West Virginia.

Sweetie boy, you are such a joy to be around! You are quite honestly the happiest, most laid-back, easy going baby I have ever seen and I am so proud you are mine! You love to help mama and daddy. You help get your arms in and out of your clothes, carseat and highchair straps like a big boy. I have never seen anything like it from someone so little!

You love to "dance" to music. Last night, we took you to Strasburg's town party and they had a band playing. Katy and Kris were dancing with you and you just laughed and kicked your chubby little feet and waved your arms around to the beat. It was so cute! Wish we would have had the video camera!

You love your yellow "my first teddy" bear. It is super soft and has a rattle inside and you just almost cannot sleep without it. Great bought you a satiny blankie/toy dog rattle that we thought you would love and you do like it but yellow bear is the one you love most.

I love you, my sunny, funny boy! Just being at home with you is the best place to be!
Love,
Mama

Easton LOVES this bear! He loves to chew on the ears and the tag. Wish I knew who gave this to him! I wrote it down in the list of gifts from the baby shower but I think that must have been moved from where I normally keep it. It's here somewhere but it is driving me crazy to not know where this bear came from! What if we lose it? I'll have to replace it because Easton cannot sleep without it now. If you are reading this blog and you sent the bear or know where it came from, please email me or leave me a comment. Must get a backup bear to have while the original Mr. Bear is in the wash. Thanks!

Couldn't resist catching E in this patch of sunlight coming through the window at my grandma's house.

Happy little man

Getting sleepy

Funny face

Later in the week, he was looking outside that same window and just looked so stinkin' cute! I had to play around with the black and white setting. These are straight out of the camera shots and I think these came out pretty nice.

Nicole and Abbie are fantastic babysitters! Anybody in the Lawton area need a sitter? Give these two a call! Girls, wish I lived closer! Or wish I could have taken you home with me! Easton loves hanging out with you and I love knowing that he's well taken care of when he's with you two. Thanks for all your help when I was there! You spoiled us both!

I have the most delicious pictures of Easton to post as soon as I get a spare minute. Unfortunately, that probably won't be tomorrow-we've got Easton's 9 month check-up tomorrow at 11, groceries to buy and a mattress to deliver to my friend Katy. {Oh, Katy! You are in for a treat tomorrow night! See, I know this guy who works where they make mattresses and we're bringing you one. Oh yeah...it's gonna be good!}
Anyway, just a little teaser to say check back Wednesday and hopefully I'll have some new pics up. In the meantime, here are some recipes I entered in a contest over at http://thepioneerwoman.com/.
Check out all the yummy recipe submissions she's getting. Woohoo! My printer's gonna be buzy!

Amy’s “Tastes Like Orange Julius” Smoothie
1 cup frozen peaches
1 small container peach yogurt
1 small can mandarin oranges
1/2 banana
splash of orange juice
splash of milk
Cool Whip

Place peaches, yogurt, milk, oranges, banana and juice into blender. Blend until smooth. Top with Cool Whip

The Whatever-You-Have-in-the-Fridge Quiche

1 unbaked pie crust
2 cups milk
4 eggs
1 cup grated cheese (or more if you like it really cheesy)
precooked meat, chopped
veggies, chopped

Preheat oven to 400. Follow directions on pie crust box. If no directions, prick the pie crust sides and bottom with fork and bake for 10 minutes. Lower oven to 350.Put desired filling (meat and cheese) into bottom of pie crust. In a small bowl, mix eggs and milk. Pour over topping. Bake at 350 for about 30 minutes or until knife inserted in the middle comes out clean. (Clear moisture is ok...just make sure your eggs are cooked through.)

My favorite combos are: ham and mushroom, chicken and broccoli, bacon and tomato, ham and spinach. Anything goes.

Sausage and Mushroom Ziti with Garlic Parmesan Sauce

1 lb box ziti noodles
19.5oz pkg sweet (or hot) turkey Italian sausage
8oz sliced mushrooms
1 cup skim milk
3-4 tbsp light margarine
8 oz light cream cheese
1/2 tsp garlic powder
1/4 tsp onion powder
1/8 tsp salt (more or less to taste)
1 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Cook ziti until al dente. Cut sausage into bite-sized pieces and brown. In a small pan, combine milk, cubed cream cheese, margarine, and seasonings. Stir until smooth. Stir in grated parmesan cheese and cook 2 to 3 minutes or until well blended. Pour pasta into large bowl. Top with mushrooms, sausage and sauce and stir until everything is covered. Top with additional Parmesan cheese if desired.

Thank you so much for the kind emails and comments, prayers and good wishes I've received lately. If you've emailed me and I still haven't responded, your email is probably buried in my inbox. I hope to get some time to check emails this weekend or maybe early next week.

My grandpa's service was beautiful. I did even kind of get the giggles during the slideshow for a few funny pictures. And that's just the way Pawpaw would have wanted it. I'm glad I got to stay a few days after the service and help my grandma with some errands and things. I'd have loved to do more but there just wasn't enough hours in the day and I'm so thankful I got to do what little I did.

We even had some fun times while I was visiting. My mom and sister and I got to go shopping all day and my mom spoiled us like crazy buying new clothes for Bonnie and Easton and me. (Thanks, mom! We REALLY needed new clothes!) On the last night I was at grandma's, we had a make-your-own-pizza party. I kinda forgot that grandman's new house only had one oven instead of two like her old house, so it took FOREVER to cook everybody's pizzas but it sure was fun! I took some pictures and hopefully I'll be able to upload them some time early next week.

For now, I'm trying to catch up on laundry and sort all the mail that piled up while I was gone, run errands, buy groceries, keep up with homework and try to get Easton back on his schedule. Whew! It's a big job! I need a break already!
